Donations of food and unwanted items from students leaving UPP accommodation are making a difference in Nottingham.
Site teams at UPP accommodation have worked with Nottingham Trent University’s Sustainability team to deliver the Big Clear Out programme, encouraging students to donate unwanted items rather than discarding them.
Thanks to the combined work of UPP and NTU teams, 1.5 tonnes of food has been donated to Himmah, a social justice organisation in Nottingham whose mission is to tackle food poverty. Himmah run a foodbank, a FoodPrint shop, and provide hot meals and educational activities to those in need.
The Big Clear Out initiative has now been nominated for a prestigious Green Gown Award. The Green Gown Awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the world. The Big Clear Out has been shortlisted in the Creating Impact category at the 2024 Green Gown Awards UK & Ireland, the winners of which will be announced at the Awards Ceremony in November.
In this video, NTU and UPP staff, including Student Engagement Lead Paula Naraval, explain how the Big Clear Out works and why sustainability is so important for us and the students who call our accommodation home.
