Environment and Net Zero: taking a science-led approach

Our path to a green future

We are living in a climate and environment emergency. As a business, we know it is imperative we act now. That’s why our environmental strategy is aligned to the UN SDGs and why UPP has publicly committed to develop an emission reduction pathway, aligned to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Net Zero Standard.

We are committed to achieving Net Zero and to supporting our university partners and their students to do the same.

We are living in a climate and environment emergency. As a business, we know it is imperative we act now to achieve the Paris Agreement. That’s why our environmental strategy is aligned to the UN SDGs and why UPP has publicly committed to the Science Based Targets initiative.

Elaine Hewitt, CEO

What are science based targets?

UPP has signed up to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). Science-based targets use independent climate science to provide companies with a clearly-defined path to reduce emissions, limiting global temperature rise to a maximum of 1.5c in order to prevent the catastrophic damage that climate change could cause.

At UPP, we have taken a robust, science-based approach to develop our pathway and identify how much and how quickly we need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in order to prevent the worst effects of climate change. This approach gives us really clear targets so we can ensure we are on track and measure how much progress we have made, and we have submitted this to the SBTi for validation.

Our environmental pillars

1. Achieving Net Zero by 2035

2. Reducing water consumption

3. Zero waste to landfill

4. Driving sustainable design

5. Enhancing biodiversity

Our environmental reporting

UPP Carbon baseline

Our carbon baseline identifies our full carbon output for 2020/2021.

This also provides the benchmark for our net zero pathway. Read our full report here:

GRESB

Our participation in GRESB assesses in detail UPP’s environmental impact, allowing UPP to evaluate and improve the sustainability performance of our assets.
